If you are a fan of Seagate"s new, superflexible Free
Agent Go
Flex Desk external hard drives, you"ll probably love the Go
Flex trang chủ NAS server. It comes with either 1TB or 2TB of storage, and can also turn any Go
Flex Desk external hard drive into a network storage device. It has a convenient remote-access solution & decent performance.

The Go
Flex trang chủ Network Storage System is a good performing, simple NAS server that is compatible with Seagate"s Go
Flex Desk external hard drives. It supports Macs và PCs và works as a print server.
The Go
Flex trang chủ doesn"t tư vấn Go
Flex Desk drives larger than 2TB. Its desktop software is rather useless and its web interface is not easy enough for beginners. You must have an internet connection to lớn register the NAS with Seagate as part of its setup.
The Go
Flex trang chủ Network Storage System is a simple storage server and a great accessory for a Seagate Go
Flex Desk hard drive. However, if you want a NAS with a lot of features, you should keep looking.
However, the Go
Flex Home"s offers only a short menu of features, a difficult website interface, a mediocre desktop application, và its built-in storage is limited to lớn 2TB.

But for about $160 for 1TB (about $230 for the 2TB version), the Go
Flex trang chủ still will make a decent investment for those who wants a simple network storage device for their home. However, if you want more features and the capability to add more storage, we recommend the HP Media
Smart server LX195.

Design & setupThe Go
Flex home NAS vps shares a similar design with the Go
Flex Desk external hard drive. The device comes in two parts: the external hard drive, which is the same as that of any Go
Flex Desk drive, and the adapter/base part.

The adapter part of the Go
Flex Desk external hard drive provides a direct-attach connection (USB, Fire
Wire, or e
SATA), and the adapter of the Go
Flex home NAS server provides a Gigabit network connection. It also has an additional USB port to lớn connect more storage or a printer.

We preferred the thiết kế of the Go
Flex Home"s base lớn that of the Go
Flex Desk external hard drive. It"s significantly wider và therefore helps the device stay firm on the surface. Even with this wider base, the whole package remains compact for a single-volume NAS server.

The Go
Flex home comes either with 1TB or 2TB of storage. However, it works with any existing Go
Flex Desk hard drive, except for the 3TB version, at least in our trials. This is rather disappointing since it means the NAS"s built-in storage is limited lớn only 2TB before you have to resort to lớn using its USB port to địa chỉ more storage. We hope Seagate will change with an updated firmware.

It"s easy to get the Go
Flex home up and running. The NAS vps comes with thiết đặt software that helps identify the server in the network and maps all the nói qua folders khổng lồ the computer. On top of that, it also installs Seagate Dashboard, which you can use later khổng lồ customize the device.

Note, however, that you will need khổng lồ have an internet connection khổng lồ set up the device as it requires you khổng lồ enter a chất lượng name for the NAS server and register it with Seagate. This name is later used khổng lồ access the vps remotely via the Internet. This means if you want lớn use the NAS vps in an isolated network, it might not be possible to set it up.

This Internet-dependent initial thiết đặt is similar to lớn that of the Verbatim Mediashare; however, the Go
Flex Home"s thiết đặt process is much simpler.

The Seagate Dashboard software has a fancy look with large, colorful buttons, but we didn"t like it. The software, powered by Memeo backup service, seems more of a gimmick than something useful. Most of its buttons don"t vì chưng what one might expect from the descriptions.

For example, there"s a button called "Load Content" with the mô tả tìm kiếm "Quickly load files onto your Go
Flex trang chủ drive." When we clicked on it there was nothing but a pop-up window that explains that you can copy files onto the mapped network drives using Windows Explorer via drag và drop--something that everybody who has used a computer before already knows.

Other buttons do similar--rather useless--things. The "Folder View" for example, just shows the NAS server"s chia sẻ folders in Windows Explorer. To lớn be fair, the software could be useful khổng lồ those who"ve hardly ever used a computer before.

Technically, you can work with the NAS server without using the software. For example, you can get khổng lồ the server"s web interface by pointing a browser to its IP address, & you can browse for the server"s giới thiệu folders using Windows Explorer and map the cốt truyện folders manually. On a Mac computer, the server automatically appears in Finder.

The part of the Seagate Dashboard desktop software that"s helpful is rather limited, & there"s a huge section at the bottom of the interface lớn coerce users into buying premium service from Memeo.

FeaturesThe Go
Flex trang chủ has almost exactly the same firmware as that of the Verbatim Media
Share. Both of these devices are powered by Hipserv, a technology based on Marvell"s wall-plug computer initiative. This means, similar to the Verbatim, the Go
Flex Home"s website interface is also oversimplified lớn the point that it"s counterintuitive. People will need lớn figure out how to use it via trial & error, as the descriptions are often inconsistent or ambiguous.

What is not ambiguous, however, is the way the Go
Flex home manages data. The hệ thống offers two types of chia sẻ folders: public and private. The public giới thiệu folder"s name is "Go
Flex trang chủ Public," which, by default, gives everybody full access to it. The private cốt truyện folder"s name is "Go
Flex trang chủ Personal," to lớn which only the currently logged-in user has access.

If you want lớn use a Go
Flex Desk external hard drive already containing data as storage for the Go
Flex trang chủ NAS server, existing data on the Go
Flex Desk will be shared as subfolders of the default public mô tả folder.

Other than these two default cốt truyện folders, there is also "External Storage" for nội dung of the external hard drive connected to the server"s USB port và "Go
Flex trang chủ Backup" that contains the backups of network computers. You can create more folders within these mặc định shares but you can"t create new shares.

Out of the box, the Go
Flex trang chủ allows for five user accounts. An admin user can add, change, & remove more users & determine whether a user has access lớn the public nội dung folder. For more users, you have lớn opt for the Seagate nội dung Pro subscription that costs $19.99 a year after a 30-day miễn phí trial.

Apart from increasing the amount of user accounts to lớn unlimited, the premium service allows for secure FTP, accessing & sharing the data stored on the vps via a thiết bị di động phone, và Flickr integration. Depending on the type of data, you can view it as a photo album or play back audio and video files. You can also use the service to integrate social web sites, such as Facebook và Flickr, with the digital nội dung on the NAS server.

The Go
Flex home comes with a vendor-assisted remote access via the Seagateshare web site. At this site, a user can sign in by entering the NAS server"s chất lượng name, username, and password, & access data stored on the vps as well as access the server"s website interface, similar lớn how it is done via the local network.

We tried this out & while it worked as intended, its initial loading time was rather long--up khổng lồ a minute. However, the load time depends on the mạng internet connection at both ends và the router to which the Go
Flex home is connected to.

The Go
Flex trang chủ can handle external hard drives formatted in both FAT32 và NTFS. Once plugged in, the hard drive"s nội dung is immediately shared as "External Storage" & its content is made available to all users.

Unfortunately, you can"t use the connected USB external hard drive as the destination lớn back up the data stored on the server"s main hard drive. This means it"s not safe khổng lồ use the server"s included storage khổng lồ store important data.

PerformanceThe Go
Flex trang chủ offered mixed performance in our testing. On one hand, it was the fastest among single-volume NAS servers in the read test with a score of 453.8Mbps, which was significantly faster than the runner-up, the Verbabtim Media
Share with a score of 435.1Mbps.

On the other hand, in the write test, the Go
Flex registered just 152.7Mbps, which was the second slowest on our charts.

What"s interesting is unlike the Go
Flex Desk external hard drive, the Go
Flex trang chủ NAS vps remained cool even during heavy loads.

Cons• Subscription required for premium features• Not all truyền thông types played in browser-based interface.• Much lower write than read speed• No media import application

According khổng lồ Seagate, the average household currently has 2.33 computers. If you’re a typical consumer faced with increasing demand for storage for those multiple computers, the latest crop of consumer-oriented NAS products provide a perfect solution.

Previously, we reviewed the Seagate Dockstar, a networked docking station for Seagate’s 2.5″ Free
Agent Go drives & Seagate’s Free
Agent Go
Flex Net truyền thông Sharing Device, which is replacing the Dockstar. This time, I’m looking at the Seagate Go
Flex Home

You can think of the Go
Flex home as a single-drive version of Seagate’s Go
Flex Net truyền thông Sharing Device that works with its Go
Flex Desk
drives, which use 3.5" Seagate Barracuda drives. Both the Go
Flex Net and home get their respective drives onto your network for sharing with Mac
OS và Windows machines và any other devices that tư vấn SMB/CIFS networking.

But instead of basing the Go
Flex trang chủ on the Pogoplug platform that the Go
Flex Net và Dockstar use, Seagate for some reason decided khổng lồ give Axentra’s Hip
Serv 2.0
OS a spin for the Go
Flex Home. If Hip
Serv rings a bell, that’s because NETGEAR uses it on its Stora. And, as you might suspect, this gives the Go
Flex home and Stora very similar feature sets (except for the Stora’s ability to tư vấn mirroring khổng lồ a second drive).

The Go
Flex trang chủ consists of a networked docking station and, depending on the mã sản phẩm you purchase, either a 1 or 2 TB Go
Flex Desk drive. The drive mounts into the dock using an SATA connection. Figure 1 shows a front view of the Go
Flex Home. On the front panel there’s a “Go
Flex Home” status indicator as well as an indicator for status. The drive status does not show disk activity – only whether the drive is ready.

Figure 1: Seagate Go

Figure 2 shows a rear view. The rear panel has a nguồn button, power port, a Gigabit Ethernet port with liên kết and activity indicators, and a USB port for sharing an external drive or printer. On the side, there’s a recessed reset button.

On The Inside

Figure 3 shows the Go
Flex trang chủ motherboard. It’s a fairly standard hardware platform commonly found in many consumer NAS products. The processor is a Marvell "Kirkwood" 88F6281
running at 1.2 GHz, 128 MB soldered RAM (Nanya NT5TU64M16DG), 512 MB of flash và a standard 10/100/1000 Marvell 88E1116R Gigabit Ethernet port. Lượt thích many consumer NAS products, the Go
Flex home does not support jumbo frames.

Figure 3: Seagate Go
Flex trang chủ inside

If you’re worried about nguồn consumption, the Go
Flex home consumes very little power. With the drive spun up, it consumes a miserly 10 W. There’s an automatic drive spin down (~ 30 minutes, not programmable) that drops power nguồn consumption to 5 W. So the Go
Flex runs cool and quiet.

Setup for the Go
Flex home is quite simple, và almost exactly like what you’d find on the NETGEAR Stora. The installation CD has both Mac
OS & Windows setup programs that work virtually identically. You are asked to lớn name your Go
Flex trang chủ and to provide an admin name và password. An agent is installed that runs in the system tray, which provides direct access lớn the Seagate dashboard.

Like the Stora, but unlike some other consumer NAS products, you must run the setup software and create one or more user accounts lớn access the device. Though the Go
Flex trang chủ has public shares, there are no unauthenticated shares on the device.

Figure 4 shows the Go
Flex home Dashboard
. In addition to partnering with Axentra for the underlying OS, Seagate also partnered with Memeo lớn provide backup software and, apparently, the Seagate Dashboard. The dashboard has four sections: Drives; How to; My Applications; & an Application store where you can purchase additional products & services.

Figure 4: Seagate Dashboard

Hands On

By default, Go
Flex trang chủ creates a private cốt truyện for your files, a private cốt truyện for your backups, và provides access to a public mô tả for each user that you create. There is no “super user” or admin who has full rights to all files. Users granted administrator rights have only the ability to lớn create other users.

The folder view shown in Figure 5 và is accessible from the thư mục view icon in the Dashboard. If they are not already mapped, Go
Flex automatically maps drives X: Y: & Z: for these three shares.

You’ll also cảnh báo in the enlarged view of Figure 5 that there’s an additional device that appears as GOFLEX_HOME_ATM. The “device” và its associated shares are used for Mac Time Machine Backups. (More on that later).

Figure 5: thư mục view

The Go
Flex home includes a built-in DLNA & i
Tunes servers
. By default, all truyền thông files placed in the "public" nội dung are available to lớn the DLNA and i
Tunes servers as well as any files / thư mục from private shares that are explicitly shared with the media servers. I uploaded about đôi mươi GB of multimedia content and it showed up automatically in i
Tunes on both my Mac và PC.

The most useful section of the dashboard is My Applications. Choosing Seagate nội dung takes you to lớn the website browser interface (Figure 6), which also provides access to preferences. The home screen has been customized with a photo I selected out of one of my albums. It’s important to chú ý that this is the exact same interface that you’ll see when you log into your Go
Flex home remotely. Other than logging out, there are only three options available from the home page: Preferences, Share, & Seagate

Figure 6: Seagate mô tả Home

I think that perhaps that Seagate introduced a bit of confusion with their selection of terms. Specifically, the difference between Shares and Seagate
Share is not immediately obvious. Seagate
, shown in Figure 7, provides access to your private, public & backup shares as well external storage if you’ve plugged a disk into the Go
Flex’s USB port.

On the other hand, nội dung that you have shared with others, which can include multimedia content, directories or individual files, shows up under Shares. It’s important to note that the Shares are just pointers back to the original files/folders. Shares vì chưng not duplicate files.

Figure 7: Seagate tóm tắt landing page

If you let your mouse hover over one of the files or folders in the left pane, a small triangle appears. If you click on the triangle, a menu of possible actions appears as shown in Figure 8. In the case below, you can mở cửa the folder, view a slide show, upload/download, địa chỉ cửa hàng to an existing “share”, create a new share, view details or make the content available to the built-in DLNA server.

Figure 8: Flyout danh sách of options for the selected folder

Clicking on “Upload” lets you either manually upload content, or use Axentra’s Drag N Drop control shown in Figure 9.

Remote Access

One of the nicest features about the Go
Flex Home, as well as the Stora, is remote access. When you set up your Go
Flex Home, you give it a unique name. If you enable sharing, all of the remote access “hard work” is done in the background. You don’t have lớn worry about port forwarding, static or dynamic IP addresses, or dynamic DNS. It all just magically works.

Although Seagate recommends that you enable UPn
P on your router, I left it disabled on mine, and remote access still worked fine. Without UPn
P enabled, however, you’ll have to manually forward ports on your router should you want khổng lồ use FTP, or if you’ve upgraded khổng lồ the optional features, secure FTP.

To access your Go
Flex Home, you merely go khổng lồ You’ll be prompted for your Go
Flex name as well as your login / password. Once you’ve been authenticated, you land at the same home page as shown in Figure 6.

Sharing nội dung is quite easy on the Go
Flex Home. First, you create a nội dung by clicking on share Selected Items. A create chia sẻ screen appears as shown in Figure 10.

Figure 10: Create share

On the right side of the screen you have lots of sharing options. You can choose to tóm tắt with other users who have logins on your Go
Flex, nội dung with "friends", chia sẻ with everyone, chia sẻ with the DLNA server & allow / disallow downloads of your content.

If you nội dung with "friends", you enter their thư điện tử addresses, and they’ll receive an e-mail with a link. If you chia sẻ with everyone, a public liên kết is created that you can paste into an email, into your blog or on one of the social networking sites. You can optionally choose to lớn password protect the share, or set an expiration date for the share.

As you’ve probably guessed by now, if you click on Shares from the Seagate Share home page, you’ll be taken to a page that displays all of the shares that you created or are authorized khổng lồ see. Figure 11 shows both my shares as well as a chia sẻ created by user Admin that was shared with me.

Figure 11: Shares that logged in user “cellison” is authorized to lớn view

When you open the album, you can view a slide show, play music or play back video clip in your browser. Filtering tools let you view all files in a share, or only images, videos, audio or files.

The slide show is somewhat limited with only a single transition, but you can adjust the slide duration from between 3 & 10 seconds. Unfortunately, due lớn some limitations of Flash, some video/audio files won’t play in your browser. I had problems with .WMV, .AVI and .m4a files. Of course, I had no problems with .MP3, .FLV, .MOV và .MP4 formats.

Of course, no consumer NAS hàng hóa would be complete without some kind of bundled backup software. After all, backing up your data is one reason that you bought a NAS, right? The Seagate Go
Flex home comes bundled with Memeo backup software. Included in the purchase price, you get licenses to back up three computers total, Windows và Mac
OS. Additional licenses are available, or you can upgrade to lớn the Memeo premium backup from Application Store in the Seagate Dashboard.

The Memeo backup software performs an automatic, continuous backup of files and folders. You don’t have khổng lồ worry about full, or incremental or differential backups. “Instant” backup is truly simple. Through advanced options, you can choose which directories you want to include if you don’t want to lớn accept the defaults. Figure 12 shows the breakdown of the files Memeo was preparing to back up.

Figure 12: Memeo Instant backup

The Go
Flex home also comes with built in support for Apple’s Time Machine. Using the Time Machine setup wizard, I successfully configured my Mac to lớn back up lớn the Go
Flex trang chủ as shown in Figures 13 and 14.

Figure 13: Time Machine thiết lập wizard

My Mac has been successfully backing up to the Go
Flex home for the last 10 days without incident.

Figure 14: It took quite a while for the 82 GB initial Time Machine Backup

Like the Netgear Stora, not all features are included in the basic price. There’s a $20 / year nâng cấp that adds more features. Figure 15 shows a comparison between the basic features that the premium features.

Figure 15: Standard vs. Pro features for the Go
Flex Home

Out of the box, the Go
Flex is limited to lớn 5 users (the Stora limits you khổng lồ 3), but the nâng cấp gives you unlimited users. As with the Stora, the premium subscription adds secure FTP access (regular FTP is free), remote access from a thiết bị di động phone, browser-based access to truyền thông libraries and links to Flickr và Facebook.

The Go
Flex trang chủ comes with a 30 day không lấy phí trial. I activated it lớn try some of the advanced features. I was disappointed that while I could connect to the Go
Flex home with both an i
Phone và my Droid, there wasn’t a slide show feature for my photos. And, of course, you know that Flash movies won’t play on your i

Testing và analysis by Tim Higgins

As I have with other simple NASes, I ran only the Vista SP1 filecopy test from our normal NAS kiểm tra suite (described here) on the Go
Flex Home, leaving the drive in its mặc định NTFS format. This demo copies a directory containing slightly more than 4 GB of files of various sizes.

I couldn’t find a firmware revision màn chơi anywhere in the Go
Flex admin GUI, so asked Seagate, who told me there wasn’t one.

Table 1 shows the Go
Flex Home’s thử nghiệm results along with the Go
Flex Net & Dockstar.

Flex Net(MB/s)Dockstar(MB/s)
Table 1: Performance test summary

The Dockstar’s performance is about as good as its drive’s USB 2.0 interface will allow. But the SATA connection between the Marvell So
C và the Go
Flex Net and Home’s drives is plenty fast to not act as a bottleneck.

Like the Go
Flex Net, the Go
Flex Home’s write tốc độ is much slower than its read. I think part of this is the unoptimized open source NTFS drivers that Axentra is probably using. I’ve seen filecopy writes and reads as high as 60 MB/s
for NASes lượt thích the Synology DS109 và QNAP TS110, the latter of which even uses an 800 MHz Kirkwood vs. The 1.2 GHz in the Go
Flex Home. But the QNAP và Synology NASes use EXT3 / 4 formatted drives và different OSes.

Closing Thoughts

There’s a lot to like about the Seagate Go
Flex Home. It’s easy to lớn use, easy to lớn set up & offers a very good value. With street pricing as low as $215 at for the 2 TB model, ($140 for the 1 TB model), the network dock with all of the built in sharing features costs only $40 more than a 1 TB Go
Flex Desk drive.

For most trang chủ users, the three Memeo licenses & the five user limitation shouldn’t be a problem—especially when you can have multiple computers logged in, as I did, with a single user account. While I found the sản phẩm điện thoại features of the premium service a bit disappointing, if you’re a Facebook and/or Flickr user, it might be worth the $20/year.

My main gripe is with the help features, which I would like to see improved. Help is not context sensitive and just either points you to lớn Seagate’s support page (Figure 16), or provides a link to the online user guide. Neither a printed user guide, nor an electronic version was included in the package. Seagate explained that having the user guide available online ensures that consumers will have access to the latest version.

Figure 16: tư vấn options

The main problem consumers will have is choosing between two similar, but different network sharing products in the Go
Flex Net và Home. Although they use different OSes (Pogoplug & Axentra), the feature sets are similar enough. So the deciding factor will be the higher price, lower capacity and portability of the Go
Flex Net’s smaller drive format vs. The lower price, higher capacity and luggability of the Go
Flex Home.

Another factor that could push you toward the Go
Flex Net is its drive-to-drive sync capability, which improves robustness và provides primary store backup. The Go
Flex trang chủ may have higher capacity, but no built-in way to lớn back it up.

So if you’re looking for an easy-to-use và inexpensive network storage solution that also has easy-peasy remote access, Seagate’s Go
Flex home offers a lot of features và a lot of storage capacity at a price that’s hard lớn beat.
